Parcel safety in difficult weather conditions — what should you keep in mind in summer and winter?
31.07.2025A practical guide from Meest Post
Extreme heat, severe frosts, heavy precipitation — the weather can ruin plans not only for us, but also for our shipments. Fortunately, courier services know how to ensure their safety even in the most challenging conditions. Still, it’s important to remember that senders and recipients also play a key role in this process. Find out what you can do to ensure your package survives any storm!
When weather becomes the enemy of parcels
Challenging weather conditions pose a real threat to courier shipments. High temperatures can cause the contents to overheat, while frost can crack materials or freeze liquids. Add rain, snowstorms, strong winds and sudden temperature shifts – and you’ve got a recipe for a damaged parcel.
Imagine ordering cosmetics that spend several hours inside a boiling hot parcel locker standing in direct sunlight. The result? Melted cream, ruined packaging, and unpleasant disappointment upon opening the box. The same risk applies to electronics, food, or medications.
How do courier companies deal with weather challenges?
While customers might not always see it, most courier companies use advanced solutions to reduce the weather’s impact on packages. Carriers invest in modern vehicle fleets – vans equipped with heating and air conditioning, as well as insulated compartments designed for delicate cargo.
What’s more, logistics centers today are no longer just warehouses – they’re carefully planned facilities using features like:
automated sorting systems,
covered loading zones,
and internal climate control systems.
When the weather gets unpredictable, logistics firms activate alternative routes, extend delivery times, or store parcels in safer locations. All this is done to ensure that your shipment reaches the recipient intact and undamaged.
Real-time shipment tracking is now a standard. It allows for a fast response if things go off-track – for example, if a courier is delayed due to weather conditions.
Senders: don’t leave it all to the courier
No matter how well organized a courier company is, the sender plays a key role in properly securing the package for transit.
When sending a parcel, make sure it is securely packaged. Depending on weather conditions, use bubble wrap, thermal bags, or boxes with extra protection. Avoid thin cardboard boxes, which soak through easily in rain. If your parcel is going to a parcel locker, make sure its contents can withstand heat or freezing temperatures.
To improve security even further:
Label your package. If something requires special care, don’t hesitate to apply stickers like “Fragile,” “Keep away from sunlight,” or “This side up.” For the courier, that’s a clear signal the package needs extra attention.
Check the forecast. If storms, high winds or extreme temperatures are expected in your area, think twice before sending your parcel now. Sometimes it’s better to wait a day or two than risk damage.
Consider insurance. For valuable goods, this is a smart way to protect yourself – especially when the weather becomes unpredictable.
Recipients: quick pickup matters
Recipients also have an important role to play in keeping shipments safe. The number one rule? Don’t delay pickup! Items left for hours in parcel lockers or non-climate-controlled locations may suffer damage – not only from heat or cold, but also from moisture or UV rays.
Always check the status of your shipment – most companies send notifications and SMS updates. If you notice damage upon pickup (e.g. soaked box, dents, etc.), take photos before opening and file a claim. The sooner, the better.
Sensitive shipments – no room for improvisation
Not every package should be exposed to extreme weather. In certain cases, it’s worth choosing express delivery or additional protection (e.g., thermal packaging). This is especially important for:
cosmetics (especially natural ones),
electronics,
food products,
supplements and medicines.
Summary – shared responsibility is key
